This visual music corresponds to what was often requested from Louis Vierne for the solemnity of the services at Notre-Dame. He respects the grandiose surroundings of the cathedral, adapting himself to the instrument’s sonorous majesty, while at the same time showing his personal sensivity.
Most organists are aware of the famous Trois Improvisations of Vierne, as transcribed by his best pupil, one Maurice Duruflé. They may not be aware of this fourth Improvisation, which was found in the possession of the executor of Vierne’s estate! Fittingly, a pupil of Durufle’s was asked to transcribe the recording, resulting in a new Vierne organ solo, published here for the first time.
