This Nativité (Nativity), which was begun on 27th December 1943 and completed on 6th January 1944, was composed immediately before the development of the sketches of the first of the Six Études, which were written to a commission from her teacher Marcel Dupré and published in 1946.

This work is remarkably individual for such an early date, showing Jeanne Demessieux to be a composer with an original, poetic, musical language and a renewed understanding of registration.

The piece is in free form and written in a voluble manner. The composer explains that her aim was “to make something light, based on the shivering, poverty-stricken tenderness of the Nativity,” a kind of antithesis of what was going on around her, punctuated by the violence of the war.
